Things to do in Savannah

Savannah was laid out by James Oglethorpe in 1733 on a grid of public squares, and that plan still shapes one of the largest urban historic districts in the country. Beneath the live oaks and Spanish moss is a working city: the Port of Savannah is among the busiest container ports in the United States, Gulfstream Aerospace builds and services business jets at the airport, and the Savannah College of Art and Design has filled historic buildings with students and studios.     Twenty-two leafy squares, each with its own monuments and architecture, punctuate the grid of the historic district, best explored on foot or by guided walking, trolley or carriage tour.

    Savannah’s largest park is famous for its white cast-iron fountain and oak-lined paths, and it hosts a Saturday farmers market, concerts and plenty of picnics on the lawn.

    A mile-and-a-half avenue lined with hundreds of live oaks leads to the tabby ruins of a colonial estate built by Noble Jones, one of Georgia’s first settlers.
