Trucking and logistics, manufacturing, healthcare at Freeman Health System and Mercy, and Missouri Southern State University drive the economy. The city is known nationally for how it rebuilt after the devastating 2011 tornado, and historic Route 66 still runs through town on its way into Kansas and Oklahoma.
