Joplin grew rich on lead and zinc during the mining boom of the late 1800s and early 1900s, and today it is the business center of the four-state region where Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma and Arkansas come together. Trucking and logistics, manufacturing, healthcare at Freeman Health System and Mercy, and Missouri Southern State University drive the economy. The city is known nationally for how it rebuilt after the devastating 2011 tornado, and historic Route 66 still runs through town on its way into Kansas and Oklahoma.
Joplin Regional Airport is a few miles north of downtown, but airline options are limited, and the nearest larger airports in Tulsa, Springfield and northwest Arkansas are each more than an hour away. Flying private makes it easy to visit plants and terminals around the four-state area or to connect to Bentonville or Branson the same day. Visitors find Civil War and Route 66 history, Missouri’s largest continuously flowing waterfall and the George Washington Carver National Monument just southeast of town.
