St. Louis grew up where the Missouri River meets the Mississippi, and it still carries itself like the river capital it once was: brick neighborhoods, old breweries and a skyline anchored by Eero Saarinen’s Gateway Arch. The economy is broader than many visitors expect. Washington University and BJC HealthCare make the region a major center for medicine and research, Boeing builds military aircraft at its plant beside Lambert, and companies such as Enterprise Mobility, Edward Jones, Centene and Emerson keep their headquarters in the metro area, many of them clustered in suburban Clayton.

That spread of offices, plants and campuses on both sides of the river is where private flying earns its keep. Spirit of St. Louis Airport in Chesterfield sits close to the western suburbs, and St. Louis Downtown Airport across the river in Cahokia is minutes from the Arch, so you can skip the terminal at Lambert and fly direct to a regional field near your next meeting. For leisure, Forest Park’s free museums and zoo, Cardinals games at Busch Stadium and the wineries of Augusta and Hermann along the Missouri River are all within easy reach.
