Things to do in Joplin

Joplin grew rich on lead and zinc during the mining boom of the late 1800s and early 1900s, and today it is the business center of the four-state region where Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma and Arkansas come together. Trucking and logistics, manufacturing, healthcare at Freeman Health System and Mercy, and Missouri Southern State University drive the economy. The city is known nationally for how it rebuilt after the devastating 2011 tornado, and historic Route 66 still runs through town on its way into Kansas and Oklahoma.

    George Washington Carver National Monument

In nearby Diamond, the first national monument dedicated to an African American preserves the farm where Carver spent his childhood, with a museum and a nature trail.

  2. 02

    Grand Falls

On Shoal Creek just south of the city, Missouri’s largest continuously flowing waterfall spills over a wide ledge of chert, a favorite spot for photos and wading.

  3. 03

    Joplin History and Mineral Museum

Exhibits on the region’s lead and zinc mining boom, a large mineral collection and displays on the city’s history, including its ties to Bonnie and Clyde.

  4. 04

    Route 66 in Galena, Kansas

A few miles west, the short Kansas stretch of Route 66 runs through Galena, where a restored service station displays the tow truck that inspired a character in Cars.

  5. 05

    Wildcat Park and Glades

Trails along Shoal Creek on the city’s south side explore rare chert glades, bluffs and woodland habitats, with a nature center focused on the region’s plants and wildlife.

In Carthage, about 15 miles away, artist Sam Butcher’s chapel features murals painted in his recognizable style, surrounded by gardens and fountains.
