Jefferson City is Missouri’s capital, set on bluffs above the Missouri River in the middle of the state. State government is by far the largest employer, and lawmakers, lobbyists, agency staff and attorneys keep the city busy, especially while the General Assembly is in session from January to May. The domed Missouri State Capitol dominates the skyline, and its interior is known for murals by Thomas Hart Benton and N. C. Wyeth. Lincoln University, founded by Black Civil War veterans, and a manufacturing and insurance base round out the economy.

Jefferson City has no airline service, so most visitors drive from Kansas City or St. Louis or connect through Columbia. Jefferson City Memorial Airport sits just across the river from downtown, making it one of the most convenient capital-city airports in the country for a same-day meeting at the Capitol or a state agency. Flying private also puts the wineries of Hermann and the Missouri River valley, the Lake of the Ozarks and Columbia all within a short hop or drive.

Things to do in Jefferson City

When to go. The legislative session from January to mid-May brings the most business traffic to Jefferson City. For leisure, spring and fall are the most pleasant, with mild weather for the riverfront and the Katy Trail, and fall harvest season in the nearby Hermann wineries, including busy Oktoberfest weekends in October. Summers are hot and humid, and winters bring cold spells with some snow.
