Things to do in Pawleys Island

Pawleys Island is one of the oldest summer resorts on the East Coast, a small barrier island where rice planters’ families once escaped the summer heat. It has kept a deliberately low-key character, with weathered beach houses, no high-rises and a self-described “arrogantly shabby” style, in contrast to the high-rise skyline of Myrtle Beach to the north. Golf, second homes and tourism drive the economy, along with Georgetown, one of the state’s oldest towns, a few miles south, and the Pawleys Island hammock, first made here in the 1880s, is famous across the country.

In Georgetown’s Old Market Building, known for its clock tower, the museum tells the story of rice cultivation, which made the region one of the wealthiest in colonial America.
