Things to do in St. Simons Island

St. Simons is the largest of Georgia’s Golden Isles, a barrier island of live oaks, salt marsh and beaches midway between Savannah and Jacksonville. Its village has a fishing pier, a historic lighthouse and a walkable cluster of restaurants and shops, while neighboring Sea Island is home to the Cloister and the Lodge, one of the most celebrated resorts in the South and host of the PGA Tour’s RSM Classic each fall. Tourism, golf and second homes drive the local economy, along with the Port of Brunswick on the mainland, a major gateway for imported vehicles.

  1. 01

    St. Simons Lighthouse Museum

Climb the 129 steps of the 1872 lighthouse for views over the sound and marsh, then tour the restored keeper’s dwelling that tells the story of life at the light station.

  2. 02

    Fort Frederica National Monument

On the island’s north end, the archaeological remains of the colonial town James Oglethorpe built in 1736 to defend Georgia against Spanish Florida sit among moss-hung oaks along the river.

  3. 03

    Sea Island

The resort’s Cloister and Lodge offer beach clubs, spa, tennis and three courses at Sea Island Golf Club, including Seaside, home of the RSM Classic each November.

  4. 04

    Pier Village

The island’s compact village center around the public fishing pier is lined with seafood restaurants, ice cream shops and boutiques, with Neptune Park and the lighthouse a short walk away.

  5. 05

    Jekyll Island Club Historic District

On neighboring Jekyll Island, the grand clubhouse and cottages built as a winter retreat for Gilded Age families such as the Rockefellers and Pulitzers now house a hotel and museum exhibits.

  6. 06

    Driftwood Beach

On Jekyll Island’s north end, the bleached skeletons of oak and pine trees stand on the sand where erosion has overtaken the forest, creating one of the most photographed beaches in Georgia.
