Things to do in Missoula

Missoula sits where five mountain valleys meet in western Montana, with the Clark Fork River running right through downtown. The University of Montana gives the city its energy, and healthcare, government and a growing number of tech and outdoor companies drive the economy. The Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation is headquartered here, the Forest Service runs its smokejumper training center and fire science lab at the airport, and the city has a strong literary and brewing culture. Norman Maclean’s “A River Runs Through It” is set in and around Missoula.

  1. 01

    The M Trail

A steep switchbacking trail climbs Mount Sentinel above the University of Montana campus to the giant concrete M, with sweeping views over the city and valleys.

  2. 02

    Smokejumper Visitor Center

At the Aerial Fire Depot near the airport, guided tours in summer explain how smokejumpers train and parachute into remote wildfires, with a look at the loft and equipment.

  3. 03

    A Carousel for Missoula

Beside Caras Park downtown, this hand-carved carousel was built by local volunteers and features dozens of wooden horses and a working band organ.

  4. 04

    Rattlesnake National Recreation Area

Just north of town, trails follow Rattlesnake Creek into a vast backcountry area and adjoining wilderness, popular for hiking, trail running and mountain biking.

  5. 05

    Montana Snowbowl

About 12 miles northwest, this unpretentious local ski area is known for steep terrain and a big vertical drop, with views across the Missoula Valley.

  6. 06

    Blackfoot River

Northeast of town, the river made famous by Norman Maclean offers classic trout water, scenic floats and riverside camping through ponderosa pine country.
