Cody was founded in the 1890s by William F. “Buffalo Bill” Cody, and the showman’s legacy is everywhere, from the Irma Hotel he named for his daughter to the Buffalo Bill Center of the West, a complex of five museums. The town sits in the Bighorn Basin at the mouth of the Shoshone River canyon, and its economy blends tourism, ranching, oil and gas, healthcare and outfitting. Dude ranches and guest lodges line the North Fork of the Shoshone toward Yellowstone, and the surrounding valleys attract second-home owners looking for wide open country.
Yellowstone Regional Airport is right at the edge of town, and the drive from Billings takes about two hours, from Denver most of a day. Flying private puts Cody within easy reach for a long weekend or a stay at a ranch. Yellowstone’s east entrance is about 50 miles west through the Wapiti Valley, and the Chief Joseph Scenic Byway and Beartooth Highway lead north toward the park’s northeast corner. Visitors watch the Cody Nite Rodeo, raft the Shoshone River and visit Heart Mountain, the site of a World War II incarceration camp for Japanese Americans.

When to go. Summer is Cody’s main season, when the Cody Nite Rodeo runs every evening and the Cody Stampede fills the Fourth of July holiday with parades and rodeo. The Plains Indian Museum Powwow takes place in June, and September brings the Rendezvous Royale arts celebration and quieter roads into Yellowstone. Fall is hunting season. In winter, the road through the east entrance closes to cars, but the town stays open and ice climbers come to the South Fork.
