Casper is Wyoming’s second-largest city and the commercial center of the middle of the state. It grew with the oil fields of Salt Creek and Teapot Dome to the north, and energy remains central today, with oil and gas operators, pipeline and service companies, uranium interests and refining, along with healthcare, retail and Casper College. Several historic emigrant trails, including the Oregon, Mormon and California trails and the Pony Express route, crossed the North Platte River here, and that history is a big part of the city’s identity.
Casper–Natrona County International Airport lies west of the city, and flying private connects Casper directly with energy sites, ranches and other Wyoming towns that are hours apart by road. Denver is about four hours south by car. For visitors, the North Platte River is one of the West’s great trout fisheries, especially the Gray Reef and Miracle Mile stretches, and Casper Mountain rises just south of town with skiing, hiking and Garden Creek Falls. The National Historic Trails Interpretive Center and Fort Caspar tell the story of the westward migration.
