Things to do in Cody

Cody was founded in the 1890s by William F. “Buffalo Bill” Cody, and the showman’s legacy is everywhere, from the Irma Hotel he named for his daughter to the Buffalo Bill Center of the West, a complex of five museums. The town sits in the Bighorn Basin at the mouth of the Shoshone River canyon, and its economy blends tourism, ranching, oil and gas, healthcare and outfitting. Dude ranches and guest lodges line the North Fork of the Shoshone toward Yellowstone, and the surrounding valleys attract second-home owners looking for wide open country.

  1. 01

Buffalo Bill Center of the West

Five museums under one roof cover Buffalo Bill, Western art, Plains Indian cultures, firearms and the natural history of the Greater Yellowstone region. Plan on at least a full day.

  2. 02

    Cody Nite Rodeo

Every night through the summer season, cowboys and cowgirls compete in bronc riding, bull riding, roping and barrel racing at the rodeo grounds west of town.

  3. 03

    Old Trail Town

On the site of the original Cody townsite, historic cabins and buildings gathered from across the region include a cabin used by Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid.

  4. 04

    Buffalo Bill Dam Visitor Center

West of town, the dam completed in 1910 spans a narrow granite canyon of the Shoshone River, and the visitor center explains its construction and the reservoir behind it.

  5. 05

    Heart Mountain Interpretive Center

Between Cody and Powell, this museum tells the story of the thousands of Japanese Americans held at the Heart Mountain camp during World War II.

  6. 06

    Chief Joseph Scenic Byway

Northwest of town, this road climbs over Dead Indian Pass with sweeping views, following a route linked to the Nez Perce flight of 1877 toward Yellowstone.
