Things to do in Pierre

Pierre is the capital of South Dakota and one of the smallest state capitals in the country, set on the bluffs of the Missouri River near the geographic center of the state. State government is the largest employer, and legislators, lobbyists and agency staff make up much of the business travel. The surrounding region is famous among sportsmen: central South Dakota offers some of the best pheasant hunting in the country, and Lake Oahe, the massive reservoir behind Oahe Dam just north of town, is known for walleye fishing.

    South Dakota Cultural Heritage Center

Built into a hillside near the Capitol, the state history museum covers the Lakota, Dakota and Nakota people, fur traders, homesteaders and more.

    Oahe Dam and Lake Oahe

One of the largest rolled-earth dams in the world holds back Lake Oahe, popular for walleye fishing, boating and camping along hundreds of miles of shoreline.

This island in the Missouri River across from downtown has trails through cottonwood forest, with deer, birds and river views.

  5. 05

    Fort Pierre National Grassland

South of town, this vast mixed-grass prairie is popular for upland bird hunting, wildlife viewing and quiet drives across open country.
