Pierre is the capital of South Dakota and one of the smallest state capitals in the country, set on the bluffs of the Missouri River near the geographic center of the state. State government is the largest employer, and legislators, lobbyists and agency staff make up much of the business travel. The surrounding region is famous among sportsmen: central South Dakota offers some of the best pheasant hunting in the country, and Lake Oahe, the massive reservoir behind Oahe Dam just north of town, is known for walleye fishing.

Pierre is not on any interstate and sits more than three hours from Sioux Falls and Rapid City by car, so getting there quickly can be a challenge. Pierre Regional Airport is minutes from the Capitol and the river, so flying private makes a day of meetings at the statehouse or a long weekend of hunting and fishing practical. Visitors also come for the South Dakota Cultural Heritage Center, the walking trails on La Framboise Island and the Verendrye Site in Fort Pierre, where French explorers buried a lead plate in 1743.

Summers are warm and dry, and winters are cold and windy, with occasional blizzards.
