Things to do in Helena

Helena was founded in 1864 after prospectors struck gold in Last Chance Gulch, and the fortunes made here built ornate commercial blocks and mansions that still line its streets. Today the capital’s economy centers on state government, along with healthcare, Carroll College, a large VA medical center at Fort Harrison and the Montana National Guard. The Montana Legislature meets in odd-numbered years from January into spring, bringing lawmakers, lobbyists and advocates to town for months at a time, and state agencies draw a steady flow of business visitors.

    Montana State Capitol

The copper-domed Capitol, open for free tours, holds notable Western art, including Charles M. Russell’s large mural of Lewis and Clark meeting the Salish in the House chamber.

    Montana Historical Society

Across from the Capitol, the society’s museum presents Montana history from early peoples to statehood, with a significant collection of work by Charles M. Russell.

  3. 03

This Gothic Revival cathedral, with twin spires modeled on Vienna’s Votivkirche, is known for its stained glass windows made in Germany and marble interior.
