Livingston was founded in 1882 by the Northern Pacific Railway, and for decades it was the place where passengers changed trains for the branch line to Yellowstone’s north entrance. The historic downtown still has its brick storefronts, saloons and grand railroad depot, now joined by galleries, bookstores and restaurants. Writers, artists and filmmakers have long gravitated here, and the economy today mixes tourism, outfitting, ranching, healthcare and the many second homes and ranches of Paradise Valley, which stretches south along the Yellowstone River toward the park.

Mission Field, Livingston’s airport, sits just east of town, and Bozeman’s larger airport is about half an hour west over Bozeman Pass. Flying private puts you within minutes of a ranch or lodge in Paradise Valley, and Gardiner and the park’s north entrance, the only entrance open to cars all year, are about an hour south. Visitors fish the Yellowstone, the longest undammed river in the lower 48, soak at Chico Hot Springs, watch wolves in the Lamar Valley and come for the Livingston Roundup Rodeo in early July. The town is also known for strong winds.

Things to do in Livingston

When to go. Summer is the main season, with the Livingston Roundup Rodeo on July 2–4 and the Yellowstone River’s famous hatches drawing anglers through the warm months. Fall brings golden cottonwoods, elk in the park and quieter roads. Winter is a special time to visit, since the north entrance road stays open to Lamar Valley, where wildlife watching is at its best in the snow.
