Billings is Montana’s largest city and the trade, medical and financial center for a vast region of eastern Montana and northern Wyoming. It sits along the Yellowstone River beneath the Rimrocks, sandstone cliffs that frame the city. Energy is a major part of the economy, with several oil refineries in and near town, along with agriculture, rail and trucking, and two large hospital systems draw patients from hundreds of miles around. Montana State University Billings and Rocky Mountain College add an academic presence.

Billings Logan International Airport sits atop the Rims, a couple of miles from downtown. Distances in this part of the West are enormous, and flying private makes it practical to visit ranches, energy sites and towns across Montana, Wyoming and the Dakotas in a single day. For leisure, the Beartooth Highway climbs from Red Lodge to the high plateau on the way to Yellowstone, the Little Bighorn Battlefield is about an hour southeast, and Pompeys Pillar preserves William Clark’s signature from 1806. Downtown has a growing brewery and restaurant scene.
