When to go. July through mid-September is peak season, when Going-to-the-Sun Road is usually fully open, trails are snow-free and Flathead Lake is warm enough for swimming. Flathead cherries ripen in late July and August. Fall brings golden larches and fewer crowds, though high roads begin closing in October. Winter means skiing at Whitefish Mountain and the Whitefish Winter Carnival in February.
