West Yellowstone is a small town built right against Yellowstone National Park’s west entrance, the park’s busiest gate and the most direct route to Old Faithful and the geyser basins. Nearly everything here serves the park’s visitors, from hotels and outfitters to fly shops, restaurants and tour operators, and the town’s population swells dramatically in summer. In winter, West Yellowstone becomes a hub for snowmobile and snowcoach tours into the park and for cross-country skiing on the Rendezvous Ski Trails, which host races and training camps.

The drive from Bozeman takes about an hour and forty-five minutes, and from Idaho Falls about two hours. Yellowstone Airport, a couple of miles north of town, operates seasonally from late spring into fall, and flying private lets you land within minutes of the park entrance and be at the geysers by afternoon. Anglers come for the Madison, Gallatin and Firehole rivers and Hebgen Lake, and families visit the Grizzly and Wolf Discovery Center. Earthquake Lake, formed by a massive 1959 landslide, lies a short drive west.

Things to do in West Yellowstone

When to go. The west entrance typically opens to cars in mid-April and closes in early November, and summer is the busiest season, with warm days, cool nights and crowded geyser basins. September and early October bring the elk rut, fall color and smaller crowds. From mid-December to mid-March, the park is reached by snowcoach and guided snowmobile tours, and cross-country skiing is excellent. Yellowstone Airport is closed in winter, so plan to fly into Bozeman.

    About 30 miles into the park, boardwalks wind through the world’s greatest concentration of geysers, with Old Faithful erupting at fairly predictable intervals through the day.
