When you land

Things to do in Provincetown

Provincetown sits at the very end of Cape Cod, wrapped around a harbor where the Pilgrims first anchored in 1620 before continuing on to Plymouth. It became a fishing port, then the oldest continuous art colony in the country, drawing painters, playwrights and writers such as Eugene O’Neill and Norman Mailer. Today it is one of the best-known LGBTQ+ destinations in the world, with a summer calendar of theme weeks, cabaret and galleries along Commercial Street, while the town’s economy rests on tourism, hospitality and the arts.

  1. 01

    Pilgrim Monument and Provincetown Museum

A 252-foot granite tower commemorates the Pilgrims’ first landing, and visitors who climb its stairs and ramps are rewarded with views over the harbor, dunes and Cape Cod Bay.

  2. 02

    Commercial Street

The town’s narrow main street runs along the harbor for about three miles, packed with galleries, shops, restaurants, bars and cabaret venues that come alive on summer evenings.

  3. 03

    Race Point Beach

Within the Cape Cod National Seashore, this wild Atlantic beach faces north and west, making it one of the few places on the East Coast to watch the sun set over the ocean.

  4. 04

    Province Lands Bike Trail

A paved loop of about eight miles winds through dunes and pine forest, with spurs to Race Point and Herring Cove beaches and a visitor center with a rooftop overlook.

  5. 05

    Whale Watching

Boats leave MacMillan Pier for Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary, a feeding ground where humpback, finback and minke whales are regularly seen from spring through fall.

  6. 06

    Provincetown Art Association and Museum

Founded in 1914, PAAM presents work by artists tied to the town’s century-long art colony alongside contemporary exhibitions, classes and talks in its galleries on Commercial Street.
