Provincetown sits at the very end of Cape Cod, wrapped around a harbor where the Pilgrims first anchored in 1620 before continuing on to Plymouth. It became a fishing port, then the oldest continuous art colony in the country, drawing painters, playwrights and writers such as Eugene O’Neill and Norman Mailer. Today it is one of the best-known LGBTQ+ destinations in the world, with a summer calendar of theme weeks, cabaret and galleries along Commercial Street, while the town’s economy rests on tourism, hospitality and the arts.

Provincetown is roughly a 2½-hour drive from Boston in light traffic, and much longer on summer weekends, when the Cape’s bridges and Route 6 slow to a crawl. Seasonal ferries help, but flying private into Provincetown Municipal Airport, set among the dunes just outside town, makes a weekend realistic from New York, Boston or farther away. Visitors spend their days on the beaches of the Cape Cod National Seashore, biking the Province Lands trails, whale watching on Stellwagen Bank and eating fresh seafood by the harbor.

Things to do in Provincetown

When to go. Provincetown is liveliest from late June through early September, with warm beach days, packed sidewalks and August’s Carnival week as the summer’s biggest celebration. May and June bring the start of whale-watching season and more relaxed crowds, the Provincetown International Film Festival arrives in June, and September and October offer mild weather, open galleries and quieter beaches. Winter is very quiet, with many businesses closed.
