Plymouth was founded by the Pilgrims who arrived on the Mayflower in 1620, and the town still builds much of its identity around that history, from Plymouth Rock on the waterfront to the living history museum at Plimoth Patuxet. It is also one of the largest towns by area in Massachusetts, with ponds, cranberry bogs, pine barrens and coastline, and a growing community of new homes and planned neighborhoods such as The Pinehills. Healthcare, tourism, construction and retail form the backbone of the local economy.

Plymouth sits about 40 miles south of Boston, close enough for commuters but far enough that the drive to Logan can stretch to well over an hour in traffic. Plymouth Municipal Airport, just west of downtown, makes it easy to come and go directly, whether you are visiting family, playing golf or heading to a second home. It is also a convenient alternative to the congested Cape bridges for the Upper Cape. Visitors walk the harbor, tour the Mayflower II, eat seafood on the waterfront and play golf on some of New England’s best-regarded courses.

Things to do in Plymouth

When to go. Summer and early fall are the most popular times to visit Plymouth, with harbor cruises, whale watching and the full schedule of Plimoth Patuxet’s outdoor exhibits. Thanksgiving draws visitors for America’s Hometown Thanksgiving Celebration and holiday dinners in town. Fall brings the cranberry harvest, when flooded bogs turn crimson. Winters are cold but milder than inland Massachusetts, and spring arrives slowly along the coast.
