Springfield is the largest city in western Massachusetts and the business center of the Pioneer Valley along the Connecticut River. It is the birthplace of basketball, invented here by James Naismith in 1891, and the site of the Springfield Armory, which produced American military rifles for nearly two centuries. Today the city’s economy is built on healthcare, insurance (MassMutual is headquartered here), education, manufacturing and entertainment, including the MGM Springfield resort downtown.

Springfield is about 90 miles west of Boston, and Bradley International Airport is just across the Connecticut line. For a short business trip or a visit to the Five Colleges upriver in Northampton and Amherst, flying private into Westfield-Barnes or Bradley gets you close without connecting through a larger hub. Visitors come for the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame, the Dr. Seuss Museum and the Springfield Museums, the Big E fair in neighboring West Springfield and hikes and swimming along the river valley.

September brings the Big E, a 17-day fair that draws more than a million visitors, and October foliage colors the hills along the Connecticut River. Summer is warm and humid, good for hiking and outdoor concerts. Winters are cold and snowy, but the Hall of Fame and museums make good indoor options.
