Nantucket lies about 30 miles south of Cape Cod, and its remoteness has preserved a town that looks much as it did when it was the center of the world’s whaling trade in the early 19th century. Cobblestone Main Street, captains’ houses and gray cedar-shingled cottages make up one of the largest concentrations of pre–Civil War buildings in the country. Today the island economy runs on tourism, second homes, construction and the businesses that serve a summer population many times larger than its year-round community.
Getting to Nantucket by ferry means first driving to Hyannis, often through Cape traffic over the Sagamore or Bourne bridges, then spending an hour or more on the water. Flying private takes you straight to Nantucket Memorial Airport, a short ride from town, so a Friday departure from New York, Boston or Washington can end with dinner on the harbor. Days are spent biking to ’Sconset, swimming at Surfside or Jetties Beach, sailing, fishing for striped bass and bluefish, and browsing the galleries and boutiques of the historic downtown.

When to go. Summer is high season on Nantucket, with warm beach days and a full calendar that includes the Fourth of July celebrations and sailing races. The Daffodil Festival in late April and the Nantucket Wine & Food Festival in May open the season, and September and early October bring quieter beaches, mild water and the Cranberry Festival. Christmas Stroll in early December lights up Main Street. Fog is common in spring and early summer, so allow some flexibility.
