Things to do in St. Augustine

Founded by the Spanish in 1565, St. Augustine is the oldest continuously occupied European-established settlement in the contiguous United States, and its narrow streets, coquina walls and Spanish colonial buildings make that history easy to feel. The Castillo de San Marcos guards the bayfront, Henry Flagler's Gilded Age hotels anchor the downtown skyline, and St. George Street is lined with shops, taverns and museums. Horse-drawn carriages and trolley tours still clip along the bayfront.

  1. 01

    Castillo de San Marcos

This coquina fortress, built by the Spanish between 1672 and 1695, is the oldest masonry fort in the continental U.S., with cannon-firing demonstrations by costumed rangers on many days.

  2. 02

    St. George Street

The pedestrian-only heart of the historic district is lined with shops, restaurants, taverns and museums, including the Colonial Quarter living-history site.

  3. 03

    Flagler College

Henry Flagler's Hotel Ponce de Leon, opened in 1888 in the Spanish Renaissance style with Tiffany glass windows, is now Flagler College and offers guided historic tours.

  4. 04

St. Augustine Lighthouse & Maritime Museum

Climb 219 steps to the top of this black-and-white striped 1874 lighthouse for sweeping views, then explore maritime archaeology exhibits on Anastasia Island.

  5. 05

St. Augustine Alligator Farm Zoological Park

Open since 1893, one of Florida's oldest attractions is home to every living species of crocodilian, plus a wading-bird rookery and a zipline course.

  6. 06

    Anastasia State Park

Miles of beach, dunes and salt marsh across the bay from the historic district, with kayaking, camping and the St. Augustine Amphitheatre just outside the park.
