Things to do in Aspen

Aspen began as a silver-mining boomtown in the 1880s, faded after the silver crash and was reinvented after World War II as a ski resort and cultural retreat. Today it is one of the best-known mountain towns in the world, with four ski areas run by Aspen Skiing Company, a historic downtown of brick storefronts and galleries, and a calendar shaped by the Aspen Music Festival and School and the Aspen Institute. Real estate, hospitality, retail and the people who own second homes in the Roaring Fork Valley drive the local economy.

  1. 01

    Aspen Mountain

Rising directly above downtown, Aspen Mountain is served by the Silver Queen Gondola and offers no beginner terrain, just steep groomers, glades and a summit restaurant with views across the Elk Mountains.

  2. 02

    Maroon Bells

The twin peaks reflected in Maroon Lake are among the most photographed mountains in North America. In summer and fall, access is largely by reservation and shuttle bus from Aspen Highlands.

  3. 03

    Snowmass

The largest of Aspen’s four ski areas, Snowmass has long, cruising runs and a base village, and in summer it becomes a hub for mountain biking, hiking and family activities.

  4. 04

    Aspen Music Festival and School

Each summer, students and acclaimed professionals perform orchestral, chamber and solo concerts under the Benedict Music Tent and in the intimate Harris Concert Hall.

  5. 05

    Aspen Art Museum

Housed in a woven-timber building by Shigeru Ban in the heart of downtown, this non-collecting museum presents contemporary exhibitions and has a rooftop café with mountain views.

  6. 06

    Independence Pass

When it is open in the warmer months, State Highway 82 climbs over the Continental Divide east of town past the ghost town of Independence, alpine lakes and wide tundra views.
