Durango was founded by the Denver & Rio Grande Railway in 1880 to serve the silver mines of the San Juan Mountains, and its Victorian downtown still revolves around the depot where the narrow-gauge train to Silverton departs. Today it is the commercial hub of southwest Colorado, home to Fort Lewis College, regional healthcare, and a tourism economy built on the railroad, the Animas River and nearby Purgatory Resort.
