Durango was founded by the Denver & Rio Grande Railway in 1880 to serve the silver mines of the San Juan Mountains, and its Victorian downtown still revolves around the depot where the narrow-gauge train to Silverton departs. Today it is the commercial hub of southwest Colorado, home to Fort Lewis College, regional healthcare, and a tourism economy built on the railroad, the Animas River and nearby Purgatory Resort. Its mix of outdoor recreation and Western history draws families, cyclists and second-home owners.

Durango is far from Colorado’s Front Range, roughly a six-hour drive from Denver across several mountain passes. Durango–La Plata County Airport, southeast of town, puts private flights a short drive from downtown and the river. From there, Mesa Verde National Park, the San Juan Skyway and the towns of Silverton and Ouray are all within reach, and Telluride and Pagosa Springs make easy side trips. Visitors come for rafting the Animas, mountain biking, skiing at Purgatory and the hot springs at Trimble.
