Vail opened as a ski area in 1962, founded in part by veterans of the 10th Mountain Division who had trained nearby at Camp Hale during World War II. The resort grew into one of the largest single-mountain ski areas in North America, and the town below it was designed from the start around pedestrian villages with a Tyrolean feel. Tourism, real estate and resort operations drive the economy of the Eagle River Valley, which also includes Beaver Creek, Edwards and a large population of second-home owners.

The drive from Denver on Interstate 70 crosses Vail Pass and the Eisenhower Tunnel, and on powder weekends or during storms it can stretch to many hours. Eagle County Regional Airport, west of town, handles much of the valley’s air traffic and gets travelers to the slopes far faster than the highway. Flying private lets you land within a short drive of the lifts on your own schedule. Summer visitors come for hiking, mountain biking, golf, fly-fishing on the Eagle and Colorado rivers and the dance and music festivals held in town.

Things to do in Vail

When to go. Vail’s ski season usually opens in mid-November and runs into April, with deep midwinter snow and sunny spring skiing in March. The holidays and Presidents’ Day weekend are the busiest. Summer brings wildflowers, a classical music festival with visiting orchestras and the Vail Dance Festival, plus golf and mountain biking. Mid-September offers golden aspens and quieter trails, and the shoulder seasons of late spring and late fall are slow.
