Colorado Springs sits at the foot of Pikes Peak and is defined in large part by the military and aerospace presence around it: the U.S. Air Force Academy, Fort Carson, Peterson and Schriever Space Force Bases and the headquarters of U.S. Space Command and NORAD-related operations. Defense contractors, cybersecurity firms and the U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Committee, headquartered downtown, add to the steady stream of business travelers, alongside a tourism industry built around the mountains and the historic Broadmoor resort.

The city has its own commercial airport, but many routes still require a connection, and the drive to Denver on Interstate 25 often slows to a crawl in the corridor between the two cities. Flying private lets defense and aerospace teams move between Colorado Springs and other bases or plant sites without a hub layover. Leisure travelers come to drive or ride the cog railway up Pikes Peak, walk among the red rocks of Garden of the Gods, tour the Air Force Academy and explore Manitou Springs and Old Colorado City.

Things to do in Colorado Springs

When to go. Colorado Springs enjoys plenty of sunshine and a relatively mild climate for its elevation. Summer is the busiest season, when the Pikes Peak Highway is fully open and the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb runs in late June. September and October bring crisp days and aspen color in the nearby mountains. Winters see occasional snow but frequent thaws, and Pikes Peak’s summit can be cold and windy in any month.
