Winter Park is one of Colorado’s oldest continuously operating ski resorts, set just beyond Berthoud Pass in Grand County and long known as a favorite of Denver skiers. Winter Park Resort includes the famous mogul runs of Mary Jane, and the area has a mix of condos, cabins and ranch-style homes that attract families and second-home owners. Beyond skiing, Grand County is known for mountain biking, ranches, fishing and access to Rocky Mountain National Park’s western side.

The drive from Denver is relatively short, but Interstate 70 and Berthoud Pass can slow to a crawl in winter storms. Granby–Grand County Airport is the closest public airport, with a hard runway serving private aircraft in the valley below Winter Park. Flying private puts you close to the slopes and to the lakes and ranches around Granby. Visitors come for skiing, snowshoeing and tubing in winter and mountain biking, fishing and boating on Grand Lake in summer.

Things to do in Winter Park

When to go. Winter Park’s ski season usually opens in November and runs into April, with spring skiing on Mary Jane extending later in some years. Summer brings cool temperatures, mountain biking and music events, and wildflowers in July. Fall offers golden aspens and quiet trails. Winter storms can make Berthoud Pass challenging, so flexibility is wise, and spring and late fall are the slowest times in town.
