Breckenridge was founded during the 1859 gold rush, and its downtown historic district preserves one of the largest collections of Victorian buildings in Colorado. Breckenridge Ski Resort spreads across five peaks of the Tenmile Range, and its high terrain, including one of the highest chairlifts in North America, keeps the town busy all winter. Hospitality, real estate and second homes drive the economy of Summit County, which also includes Keystone, Copper Mountain and Arapahoe Basin.
Breckenridge is about two hours from Denver without traffic, but the Interstate 70 corridor can turn into a long crawl on weekends and powder days. The nearest public airport is the high-altitude field in Leadville, and flying private lets you skip most of the highway on your own schedule. Once in town, visitors ski and snowboard all winter and come back in summer for hiking, mountain biking, paddling on Lake Dillon and festivals that fill Main Street.
