Things to do in Vail

Vail opened as a ski area in 1962, founded in part by veterans of the 10th Mountain Division who had trained nearby at Camp Hale during World War II. The resort grew into one of the largest single-mountain ski areas in North America, and the town below it was designed from the start around pedestrian villages with a Tyrolean feel. Tourism, real estate and resort operations drive the economy of the Eagle River Valley, which also includes Beaver Creek, Edwards and a large population of second-home owners.

  1. 01

Vail Mountain and the Back Bowls

Vail’s front side is known for long groomed runs, while the wide-open Back Bowls and Blue Sky Basin offer powder skiing across thousands of acres on the mountain’s far side.

  2. 02

    Beaver Creek

About ten miles west of Vail, this upscale resort is known for its uncrowded slopes, a polished base village and the Birds of Prey downhill course used for World Cup racing.

  3. 03

    Vail Village

Covered bridges, clock towers and car-free cobblestone streets lead past boutiques, restaurants and après-ski bars at the base of Gondola One.

  4. 04

    Betty Ford Alpine Gardens

Among the highest botanical gardens in North America, these free gardens in Ford Park showcase alpine plants, waterfalls and a rock garden that bloom through the short summer.

  5. 05

    Colorado Snowsports Museum

In Vail Village, this museum traces the history of skiing and snowboarding in Colorado, including the story of the 10th Mountain Division soldiers who trained in the region.

  6. 06

    Gore Creek

Running right through town, Gore Creek is designated Gold Medal water for trout fishing, and the recreation path alongside it is popular with walkers and cyclists.
