Things to do in Albuquerque

Albuquerque is New Mexico’s largest city, spread along the Rio Grande beneath the granite face of the Sandia Mountains. Science and defense shape its economy: Sandia National Laboratories and the Air Force Research Laboratory operate on Kirtland Air Force Base, and a cluster of aerospace, optics and laser companies has grown up around them. The University of New Mexico and its hospital, a semiconductor plant in neighboring Rio Rancho and major film and television studios add to the mix, and the city’s high desert light and landscapes have made it a frequent filming location.

    Sandia Peak Tramway

One of the world’s longest aerial trams climbs from the city’s northeast edge to the crest of the Sandias, more than 10,000 feet up, with views across much of New Mexico.

    Old Town Albuquerque

The city’s original Spanish colonial plaza is ringed by adobe buildings housing shops, galleries and restaurants, anchored by the historic San Felipe de Neri Church.

On the city’s west mesa, short trails lead past thousands of images carved into volcanic boulders by ancestral Pueblo people and early Spanish settlers.
