Albuquerque is New Mexico’s largest city, spread along the Rio Grande beneath the granite face of the Sandia Mountains. Science and defense shape its economy: Sandia National Laboratories and the Air Force Research Laboratory operate on Kirtland Air Force Base, and a cluster of aerospace, optics and laser companies has grown up around them. The University of New Mexico and its hospital, a semiconductor plant in neighboring Rio Rancho and major film and television studios add to the mix, and the city’s high desert light and landscapes have made it a frequent filming location.

The Sunport is the state’s main airline airport, but nonstop options are limited and many trips still route through Denver, Dallas or Phoenix. Flying private from Albuquerque reaches Taos, Ruidoso, Los Alamos and the oil country of southeastern New Mexico directly, along with ranches and resort towns across the region. Visitors come for the October Balloon Fiesta, the tram ride up Sandia Peak, adobe Old Town, the Indian Pueblo Cultural Center and a food culture built on red and green chile, and Santa Fe is about an hour north.

Things to do in Albuquerque

When to go. Fall is Albuquerque’s best season, with crisp mornings, clear skies and the smell of roasting green chile in August and September. The Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta, the largest balloon event in the world, fills nine days in early October and books hotels far ahead. Summers are hot and dry, with monsoon storms in July and August, spring brings strong winds, and winters are cool and mostly sunny at the city’s 5,000-foot elevation.
