Las Cruces is New Mexico’s second-largest city, set in the fertile Mesilla Valley along the Rio Grande beneath the jagged spires of the Organ Mountains. New Mexico State University is a major employer, and the surrounding desert is one of the country’s most important testing grounds: White Sands Missile Range, NASA’s White Sands Test Facility and Spaceport America all lie within reach. Agriculture remains central, with vast pecan orchards lining the river and the chile fields of Hatch just up the valley, and a mild, sunny climate has made the city a popular place to retire.

El Paso International is about 45 miles south, and Albuquerque is more than three hours north, so flying private into Las Cruces International Airport, on the mesa west of town, saves real time for university visitors, aerospace teams and agricultural buyers. For leisure, the historic plaza in Mesilla is a few minutes away, hikers head into Organ Mountains-Desert Peaks National Monument, and the gypsum dunes of White Sands National Park lie about an hour northeast over San Agustin Pass.
