Carlsbad sits on the Pecos River in southeastern New Mexico, at the western edge of the Permian Basin, and the region’s drilling boom has made Eddy County one of the most productive oil and gas areas in the country. Energy companies, oilfield service firms, pipeline operators and their crews keep local hotels full. Potash mining has been part of the economy since the 1930s, and the Department of Energy’s Waste Isolation Pilot Plant, a deep underground repository east of town, adds a significant federal and contractor presence.
Carlsbad is a long way from major airports: about two and a half hours by car from El Paso or Midland and more than four from Albuquerque. Flying private into Cavern City Air Terminal, a few minutes from town, makes it possible to visit well sites, offices and field operations and fly home the same day. Visitors come for Carlsbad Caverns, about 20 miles southwest, where an elevator or the natural entrance trail descends into enormous decorated chambers, and for Guadalupe Mountains National Park just across the Texas line. The Pecos River winds through town with a beach and riverwalk.
