Founded by the Spanish around 1610, Santa Fe is the oldest state capital in the United States and one of the most distinctive small cities in the country. Its Pueblo Revival architecture, centuries-old plaza and setting at 7,000 feet in the foothills of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains have drawn artists, writers and collectors for more than a century. State government, tourism and an outsized art market drive the economy, and the city is home to the Santa Fe Institute, a renowned complexity research center, as well as many people who work at Los Alamos National Laboratory.

Santa Fe’s municipal airport is about fifteen minutes from the Plaza, but airline options are limited, and many visitors still fly into Albuquerque and drive an hour north. Flying private puts you on the ground close to town, with time to settle into an adobe inn before an evening at the opera. Visitors come for the galleries of Canyon Road, the Georgia O’Keeffe Museum, Indian Market, Meow Wolf, spas in the foothills and some of the best New Mexican cooking anywhere, with Taos, Bandelier and the hot springs of Ojo Caliente within easy reach.

When to go. Summer is Santa Fe’s busiest season, with the Santa Fe Opera running from late June through August, the Traditional Spanish Market in July and Santa Fe Indian Market, the largest Native art market in the world, in August. Late September brings golden aspens in the Sangre de Cristos. December is magical, with farolitos lining the streets, and winter brings skiing at Ski Santa Fe. Nights are cool year-round.
