Ruidoso is a mountain resort town in the Sacramento Mountains of southern New Mexico, set among pine forest along the Rio Ruidoso at nearly 7,000 feet. For generations it has been a summer refuge for families from West Texas and the Permian Basin, many of whom keep cabins here, and second homes, tourism and horse racing remain the foundation of the economy. The Mescalero Apache Tribe, whose reservation borders the town, operates Ski Apache on the slopes of Sierra Blanca and the Inn of the Mountain Gods resort.

The drive from Albuquerque or El Paso takes around three hours, and from Midland, Lubbock or Dallas it is much longer, so many regular visitors fly. Sierra Blanca Regional Airport sits in the hills north of town, and flying private puts the cabin, the golf course or the racetrack a short drive away. Summer visitors come for cool weather, hiking, golf and racing at Ruidoso Downs, while winter brings skiing at Ski Apache. Nearby, the historic town of Lincoln recalls Billy the Kid and the Lincoln County War, and White Sands is about an hour and a half west.
