Things to do in Mackinac Island

Mackinac Island sits in the Straits of Mackinac between Michigan’s two peninsulas, and it has been a summer resort since the late 19th century. Motor vehicles have been banned for more than a century, so visitors get around by horse-drawn carriage, bicycle or on foot, past Victorian cottages, a historic fort and a downtown of fudge shops.     Perched on a bluff above the harbor, this restored 18th- and 19th-century fort offers costumed interpreters, cannon and rifle firings and sweeping views.
