Things to do in Aiken

Aiken became a Winter Colony for wealthy Northern families in the late 1800s, drawn by its mild climate and sandy soil, perfect for horses. That tradition lives on today: Aiken is one of the country’s most important equestrian towns, with thoroughbred training, steeplechase, polo, fox hunting and eventing, and the Hitchcock Woods, one of the largest urban forests in the country, crisscrossed by riding trails. The Savannah River Site, the University of South Carolina Aiken and a growing community of retirees and second-home owners also shape the local economy.

    Covering more than 2,000 acres in the middle of town, this private forest preserve is open to walkers and riders, with sandy trails winding through longleaf pines.

    Hopelands Gardens and the Aiken Thoroughbred Racing Hall of Fame

    A free public garden of live oaks, fountains and seasonal plantings surrounds a museum honoring the champion racehorses that trained in Aiken.
