Things to do in Bimini

Bimini is the closest part of the Bahamas to the United States, a pair of small islands and a scattering of cays roughly 50 miles east of Miami. Its reputation was made by the sea: Ernest Hemingway fished and wrote here in the 1930s, and the Gulf Stream running just offshore has long made Bimini a center of big-game fishing for marlin, tuna and wahoo. During Prohibition, Alice Town on North Bimini was a busy rum-running base. Today North Bimini holds the settlements and a large resort and marina, while South Bimini is home to the airport and a renowned shark research station.

    Bimini Road

Off the northwest coast of North Bimini, a line of large, flat limestone blocks in shallow water has fueled legends of lost Atlantis and makes for an intriguing snorkel or dive.

  2. 02

    SS Sapona

This concrete-hulled ship, once used as a liquor warehouse during Prohibition, ran aground south of Bimini in a 1926 hurricane, and its shallow wreck is now a popular snorkeling site.

  3. 03

Alice Town and the King’s Highway

North Bimini’s main road threads past conch stands, small bars, churches and fishing docks, with Radio Beach and the Gulf Stream just a short walk away.

  4. 04

    Honeymoon Harbour

A sheltered cove at Gun Cay, south of Bimini, with bright white sand and clear water where friendly rays and fish gather around visiting boats.

  5. 05

    Dolphin House

A local craftsman spent decades building this whimsical house in Alice Town from shells, bottles, tiles and found objects collected on the island and from the sea.

  6. 06

Big-game fishing in the Gulf Stream

Charter boats from Bimini’s marinas head minutes offshore into the Gulf Stream for marlin, sailfish, tuna, wahoo and mahi, continuing the tradition that drew Hemingway here.
