Things to do in Birmingham

Birmingham was founded after the Civil War as an iron and steel town, and the Vulcan statue on Red Mountain still nods to that past. Today the city’s largest employer is the University of Alabama at Birmingham, whose academic medical center draws patients and researchers from across the South, and the metro area is also a banking and insurance center, home to Regions Financial and a number of other major companies. Birmingham’s role in the civil rights movement, from the Children’s Crusade to the bombing of the 16th Street Baptist Church, makes its downtown a place of pilgrimage.

  1. 01

    Birmingham Civil Rights Institute

Across from the 16th Street Baptist Church and Kelly Ingram Park, the institute’s galleries trace the struggle for civil rights in Birmingham, from segregation to the marches of 1963.

  2. 02

    Vulcan Park and Museum

The world’s largest cast-iron statue, the Roman god of the forge, stands atop Red Mountain, with an observation deck and a museum on the city’s industrial history.

  3. 03

    Sloss Furnaces National Historic Landmark

This former pig-iron plant, with its towering blast furnaces and boilers, is preserved as a museum that tells the story of the city’s industrial workers and hosts concerts and events.

  4. 04

    Barber Vintage Motorsports Museum

East of downtown, a glass-walled museum showcases what is billed as the world’s largest motorcycle collection, beside a racetrack that hosts IndyCar and motorcycle races.

  5. 05

    Railroad Park

Downtown’s green space along the railroad tracks has lawns, ponds, walking paths and skyline views, with the Birmingham Barons’ ballpark at Regions Field next door.

  6. 06

    Birmingham Museum of Art

One of the largest municipal art museums in the Southeast, it holds a wide collection spanning Asian, European, American and African art, with free general admission.
