Birmingham was founded after the Civil War as an iron and steel town, and the Vulcan statue on Red Mountain still nods to that past. Today the city’s largest employer is the University of Alabama at Birmingham, whose academic medical center draws patients and researchers from across the South, and the metro area is also a banking and insurance center, home to Regions Financial and a number of other major companies. Birmingham’s role in the civil rights movement, from the Children’s Crusade to the bombing of the 16th Street Baptist Church, makes its downtown a place of pilgrimage.

Birmingham sits at the center of Alabama, which makes it a natural base for flying to the rest of the state and the Southeast. Instead of driving four hours to the Gulf Coast or two to Lake Martin, Huntsville or an Auburn game, you can depart Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International a few minutes from downtown and land close to where you are headed. Visitors stay for the Civil Rights District, the Barber Vintage Motorsports Museum, Railroad Park and a restaurant scene that has earned national attention for chefs who put Southern ingredients front and center.

When to go. Spring and fall are the most pleasant seasons in Birmingham, with mild temperatures and blooming dogwoods or turning leaves on the surrounding ridges. In spring, IndyCar racing comes to Barber Motorsports Park, and in late October the Magic City Classic, one of the biggest HBCU football games in the country, fills Legion Field. Summers are hot and humid with afternoon thunderstorms, and winters are mild with occasional ice.
