Gulf Shores and its neighbor Orange Beach share Alabama’s stretch of the Gulf of Mexico, with white sand, emerald water and a long string of condominiums and beach houses. Tourism is the economy here, from family vacations and second homes to golf, events and offshore fishing charters that run out of Orange Beach’s marinas through Perdido Pass. Gulf State Park and the Bon Secour National Wildlife Refuge protect large stretches of dunes, maritime forest and lakes, and the Flora-Bama on the Florida line is one of the most famous beach bars in the country.

The drive from Birmingham or Atlanta can take four or five hours, and the last stretch through Foley can back up for miles on summer Saturdays. Flying private into Jack Edwards National Airport in Gulf Shores sets you down a few minutes from the beach, with Pensacola International as a nearby alternative. Families and groups can arrive in time for dinner on the water and leave on their own schedule. Days are spent on the beach, fishing for red snapper, kayaking the back bays or catching live music at the Wharf in Orange Beach.
