Mobile was founded by the French in 1702, and its port on Mobile Bay has driven the city’s fortunes ever since. Today the Port of Mobile handles a large share of Alabama’s trade, Airbus assembles commercial jets at the Brookley Aeroplex, and shipbuilders and steel and chemical plants line the river and bay. Mobile also lays claim to the oldest Mardi Gras celebration in the United States, and its historic districts, oak-lined streets and azaleas give the city a character distinct from the rest of Alabama.

Mobile is three to four hours from Birmingham by car and farther from Atlanta or Nashville, so business and leisure travelers alike benefit from flying direct. Mobile Downtown Airport at Brookley is a short drive from the city center, and Mobile Regional Airport lies to the west. From there it is easy to reach the Eastern Shore towns of Daphne and Fairhope or continue on to Gulf Shores. Visitors come for the USS Alabama, Bellingrath Gardens, Dauphin Street’s restaurants and bars and the parades of Carnival season.
