Lake Martin was created in the 1920s when Alabama Power built Martin Dam on the Tallapoosa River, and its more than 40,000 acres of clear water and hundreds of miles of wooded shoreline have made it Alabama’s favorite lake for second homes. Families from Birmingham, Montgomery and Atlanta keep houses along its coves, and the communities developed by Russell Lands, including Russell Crossroads, have added restaurants, marinas and golf. The nearby town of Alexander City is the main commercial center, with a long manufacturing history.

The lake is about an hour and a half from Birmingham and more than two hours from Atlanta, and the final stretch on two-lane roads can be slow on summer Fridays. Flying private into Thomas C.
