When you land

Things to do in Lake Martin

Lake Martin was created in the 1920s when Alabama Power built Martin Dam on the Tallapoosa River, and its more than 40,000 acres of clear water and hundreds of miles of wooded shoreline have made it Alabama’s favorite lake for second homes. Families from Birmingham, Montgomery and Atlanta keep houses along its coves, and the communities developed by Russell Lands, including Russell Crossroads, have added restaurants, marinas and golf. The nearby town of Alexander City is the main commercial center, with a long manufacturing history.

  1. 01

    Wind Creek State Park

On the lake’s eastern shore near Alexander City, this park offers one of the largest state-operated campgrounds in the country, with a marina, fishing pier, trails and beach.

  2. 02

    Chimney Rock

This rocky outcrop along the shoreline is a popular boat-in spot where daring swimmers jump from the ledges into the lake, while others watch from anchored boats.

  3. 03

    Russell Crossroads

A walkable village built by Russell Lands includes a market, restaurants, shops, trails and a stable, and hosts concerts and events throughout the warmer months.

  4. 04

    Kowaliga Restaurant

Named for a Hank Williams song inspired by the lake, this waterfront restaurant serves Southern cooking with a large deck and boat slips for diners arriving by water.

  5. 05

    Smith Mountain Fire Tower

A short but steep hike leads to a restored fire tower on Smith Mountain, where the climb to the top rewards visitors with panoramic views of the lake.

  6. 06

    Horseshoe Bend National Military Park

North of the lake, this park preserves the site of the 1814 battle where Andrew Jackson’s forces defeated the Red Stick Creek, with a museum and driving tour.
