Frederick is Maryland’s second-largest city and a historic crossroads at the foot of the Catoctin Mountains, about an hour from both Washington and Baltimore. Fort Detrick, with its biomedical research laboratories, anchors a growing life sciences and biotechnology sector, and healthcare, technology, government contracting and agriculture fill out the local economy. The historic downtown, with its church spires and restored brick buildings, has become one of the region’s favorite destinations for dining, shopping and nightlife.

Traffic on I-270 is some of the heaviest in the region, which makes the trip to and from the Washington suburbs unpredictable. Frederick Municipal Airport, a busy general aviation field just east of downtown, makes private flights a convenient way for executives and researchers to come and go. Visitors explore Civil War battlefields at Monocacy, Antietam and Gettysburg, browse antiques shops and dine along Carroll Creek, visit wineries and breweries in the surrounding countryside and hike in Catoctin Mountain Park and on Sugarloaf Mountain.
