Kearney sits along Interstate 80 and the Platte River in the middle of Nebraska, a regional center for healthcare, retail, manufacturing and agriculture. The University of Nebraska at Kearney brings students and faculty, and the city’s position halfway across the state makes it a natural meeting point for businesses that work across the plains. Kearney’s history runs through the Platte River valley, the path of the Oregon, California and Mormon trails, the Pony Express and later the transcontinental railroad.

Each spring, Kearney draws visitors from around the world for one of the great wildlife spectacles in North America: hundreds of thousands of sandhill cranes gathering along the Platte to rest and feed on their way north. Kearney is more than two hours from Omaha and Lincoln by car, and far from any major airline hub. Kearney Regional Airport is just east of town, so flying private puts crane watchers, business travelers and families within minutes of the river, the university and the Great Platte River Road Archway, the museum that spans the interstate.
